These were Senator Jennings’s concerns:

1. Concern about loss of local control-would this position tell district how to run things? No, focus would be on supporting nurses, standards of care

2. He voiced concerns about Dept of Ed giving block $ to districts and why weren’t they supporting nurses in their districts-this is not part of the bill; we aren’t asking for more nurses just a consultant role with someone to collect data on the specific needs of students in the state.

3. Could support for nurses be done between nurses? We explained that in smaller districts, there are no peers to rely on, lack of time to do research, central person could address those issues

Today our bill was on the Senate Floor and was referred to the Appropriations Committee. Please look up the members of this committee and put in your two cents.  You can find these committees on legisweb.state.wy.us. You can also listen to proceedings on the floor from that website.

If our bill is still in the running, we will be attending the WNA Legislative Reception on Monday the 26th. We have developed a little reminder of school nurses that wears a WSNA pin with a message asking their support.  If you would like to help that evening, please let Chris or I know.

Thanks for all your help and support.

Hanging in there,
Jan

Well, the testimony is over.  We had some good comments but Sentor Kit Jennings brought up a couple of points that may be our downfall.  The bill has been released to the Senate Floor.  They will hear it tomorrow.  That was quick so don't know if I should feel good or bad.  You can still communicate with your senator by email to get their support.  Please take some time to email now.  I probably won't be able to get to the Senate tomorrow because of taking time off today but will try.  Toni will keep us updated if I can't get there.   Jan

Dear School Nurses,

Found out this afternoon that our bill has been sent to the Senate Education Committee and will have its hearing Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM. Senator Hastert will read the bill and answer questions. Toni Decklever will give support to the bill from WNA and Chris and I will testify to support. A little nervous tonight but will be OK by testimony time. Will send info out as soon as I can tomorrow.

Thanks to all of you who contacted their legislators.

Keep your fingers crossed that we continue to go forward.

JAN
